Welcome to Blue Haven 1
Welcome to Term 1. We have had a wonderful start to the year and we are enjoying getting to know the wonderful little personalities we have in the classroom. This term students will engage in a number of exciting and varied learning experiences to explore the following key concepts:
ENGLISH: Students are building on their sound knowledge in daily explicit Letters and Sounds sessions. Pre Primary students are focusing on orally blending and segmenting words and identifying initial, middle and end sounds in words. They are exploring with writing and reading simple CVC words. Year 1 students are continue to work on learning diagraphs and graphemes. They are working on building a larger bank of high frequency words and focussing on different reading strategies. Year 1 students are focussing on spelling the gold high frequency words and moving onto spelling red words.
As a class we have been reading a series of chapter books called 'The Dragonsitter'. We are also reading big books and non-fiction texts and exploring the differences between the text types.
MATHS: Pre Primary students are continuing their focus on number and operations. They are also exploring shape. Year 1s are working on number concepts such as number bonds to 10, counting backwards and forwards from any starting point, recognising number patterns and simple addition. The students are also exploring more complex 2D shapes.
SCIENCE: Pre-Primary topic: 5 senses, Weather Year 1 topic: Weather
HASS: Pre Primary students will explore the big question "My Family". Year 1s will grow their research and inquiry skills as they investigate how weather impacts us and the Aboriginal seasons.
STEM: (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) is providing some amazing opportunities for children across our school to develop problem solving skills, to design, create, test and explore different techniques to create a product. This process opens up language and vocabulary, team work, collaboration and problem solving between students.
TRIBES: We continue our focus across the Tribes Agreements - Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, Appreciations/No Put Downs, Participation - Right to Pass. Specific emphasis this term will be placed on practicing and incorporating
MUTUAL RESPECT: to affirm the value and uniqueness of each person. To recognise and appreciate individual and cultural differences and to offer feedback and encourage growth.
